Visa Requirements

Do I Need a Visa to Enter Japan?

To visit Japan as a tourist, you will need either a visa or a visa waiver.

If your country is part of Japan’s visa exemption program, you do not need to apply for a visa before your trip. When you arrive in Japan, immigration will place a Landing Permission sticker or stamp in your passport. This acts as your temporary entry pass and allows you to stay for a short period, usually 15, 30, or 90 days depending on your nationality.

What Is a Visa Waiver for Japan?

A visa waiver means you are allowed to enter Japan without submitting a visa application before traveling. This is available to passport holders from over 70 countries.

With a visa waiver, you can:

  • Fly to Japan without visiting an embassy

  • Enter for tourism, business meetings, or short-term visits

  • Receive permission to stay when you pass through immigration

You should still have proof of accommodation, a return or onward flight, and basic travel plans. Immigration officers may ask to see them.

You can check if your country is eligible on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website.

What If My Country Is Not Eligible for a Visa Waiver?

If your passport is not from a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a tourist visa before entering Japan.

Most short-term tourist visa applications require:

  • A valid passport

  • A completed visa application form

  • One recent passport-size photo

  • A copy of your travel itinerary

  • Proof of accommodation

  • Financial documents to show you can cover your expenses

  • Flight booking or reservation (recommended)

Visa processing times vary, but applying at least one month before your travel date is a good idea. You must get your visa approved before your flight to Japan. Travelers without the correct visa will not be allowed to enter.

Where Can I Find Japan's Visa Requirements?

Visa requirements for short-term stays in Japan are available on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

If your country is not part of Japan's visa waiver program, you must apply for a tourist visa before traveling. Entry will be denied without a valid visa, so make sure to complete your application well in advance.
