Power Adapter & Electricity
What Voltage Does Japan Use?
Japan’s electricity supply runs on 100 volts with a frequency of 50 Hz in eastern Japan (including Tokyo) and 60 Hz in western Japan (including Osaka and Kyoto). This is different from many other countries, so it’s important to check your devices before plugging them in.
What Type of Power Plug Does Japan Use?
Japan primarily uses Type A plugs with two flat parallel pins, the same as in North America. Some hotels may also have Type B sockets, which include a grounding pin.
If your devices use different plugs, you will need a power adapter to fit Japanese outlets.
Do You Need a Power Adapter or Converter?
If you’re coming from the US or Canada, your plugs will fit, but check if your device supports 100V.
Travelers from Europe, Asia, Australia, and most other regions will likely need a plug adapter.
If your device only supports 220-240V (common in Europe and Australia), you will also need a voltage converter to safely use your electronics in Japan.
Tips for Using Electronics in Japan
Most modern laptops, smartphones, and chargers are dual voltage, so they can handle 100V without a problem.
Always check the power label on your device or charger before plugging it in.
Consider bringing a universal travel adapter to cover multiple countries if your trip includes stops outside Japan.
